England All-rounder Ben Stokes Announces ODI Retirement

Stokes stated as an incredibly tough decision that the first ODI (One Day International) between England and South Africa taking place in Durham on Tuesday would be his last in the format.

Clarifying his decision to retire, Stokes said that playing all three formats of the game is just unsustainable for him right now. Stokes has only featured in nine ODIs since England's World Cup victory against New Zealand at Lord's in 2019. He has a total of 39.44 batting average in 104 ODIs, has taken 74 wickets, and was Player of the Match in England's incredible World Cup win in 2019.

Charlotte Edwards, former England women's captain, pours the feeling for it's the correct time for Ben Stokes to retire from ODI cricket so he can fully concentrate on the Test captaincy. Stokes' decision to retire follows his recent appointment as England's Test captain as Joe Root's successor. Therefore, this decision of his is considered a typically selfless decision that will benefit England long-term.

Benjamin Andrew Stokes; England Test captain's ODI career will forever be remembered for his Player-of-the-Match performance in the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup final against New Zealand at Lord’s.

"Not only do I feel that my body is letting me down because of the schedule and what is expected of us, but I also feel that I am taking the place of another player who can give Jos and the rest of the team their all.”- Ben Stokes.
